Hazel eyes… well, some pictures Gus’s eyes looked blueish or greenish and others, brown so hazel would make sense.  5’7”?  I still think that’s a little taller than reality, though maybe Grissom’s stockiness makes him look shorter.  Then again I’ve seen his height given as ranging from 5’4”-5’8”.  (that’s 162cm-173cm for the rest of the world).  Anyhoo… I thought that said “Photograph of beaver”. Ehhh?

From the RRAuction listing:
"Gus Grissom’s personal passport, number Y022286, issued on June 16, 1961, just five weeks before his flight aboard Liberty Bell 7. Passport measures 3.75 x 6, and is signed inside on his personal information page, “Virgil I. Grissom.” The page also states “The bearer is abroad on an official assignment for the United States Government.” Affixed below the personal information page is Grissom’s 2.5 x 3 passport snapshot, signed along the top in blue ink, “Virgil I. Grissom.”

Passport also bears three visa stamps from Spain, Panama, and Guatemala respectively. The Panama visa is dated May 29, 1963, and was undoubtably stamped as Grissom entered the country with his fellow astronauts for Tropic Survival Training at Albrook Air Force Base in the Panama Canal Zone from June 3-6, 1963. The last visa is dated May 30, 1964, less than a year from when Grissom would be the command pilot for the Gemini 3 mission. In fine condition, with expected handling and age wear. A highly personal item, enhanced by two signatures, chronicling a small portion of Grissom’s life in between missions. “

I cried when I first saw this exhibit.  Those suits were the backups for the Apollo 1 crew.

"Hey, Deke. True story. I was born on the evening of April 3rd, 1926. That just happened to be the night before Easter Sunday. The Easter Bunny personally delivered me to my house. Me and him, we go a long way back.”
"Gus, are you telling me this so that you can keep the baby rabbit for yourself?"
"Yes."
"It isn’t happening."

The Apollo 1 memorial sculpture at the Science Center of Pinellas County. This bronze was dedicated in 1972. This center is located in St. Petersburg, not far from where Ed’s family lived for a long time. He also has a hospital named after him here. I might visit it tomorrow night, it has some of his personal effects there.

So, Mr. Peck, what are you wearing?
Gus: Clothes.  What the hell?
John Glenn: Another heavy breather?
Gus: Hard to tell.

This photoset is amazing. There are like twenty pictures of Gus talking on the phone, and John Glenn hovering over him going “Get off the phone getoffthephone GETOFFTHEPHONE”

(repoasted & reblogged for gus justice)
